krisztus

A rendition of Christ strung to a vine-stock from the 15th century. The imagery which is unique in Hungary is the visual rendition of St. John's parable of "The Vine and the Branches" (15.1-17): Jesus is the vine itself from which the fruits of Christianity are born. The cross-shaped vine and the grape itself are symbols of rebirth. The vine bears new life at the expense of its own fall: wine will be produced from it which is itself a symbol of blood, life.
